As an employee, you are also a member of the EPFO by default, and you can find the fund statement yourself by using four ways to check your EPF balance online
The Employee’s Provident Fund, also known as EPS, acts as a useful savings instrument for employees where they contribute towards retirement savings along with their employer. This savings fund can also be availed if the employee chooses to switch jobs.
As an employee, you are also a member of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, also known as EPFO, by default, and you can find the fund statement yourself by using four ways to check your EPF balance online without having to wait for your employer to share it with you at the end of the year.
The four facilities you can use to check your EPF balance are:-
- Umang App
- EPFO members e-Sewa portal
- SMS
- Missed call
I. Using Umang app
The Umang application was launched by the Government of India in November 2017 to enable the accessibility to employees all across India to the government services at a single stop. This includes the EPF balance that mobile users can use to check on their Umang app with just a one-time registration using their mobile numbers. The Umang app also allows transactions, raising any claims, and even tracking the claim on the platform itself, making it more convenient.
The steps to download or print the EPF passbook from the Umang portal is as follows:-
- Download the m-Sewa app from the Google Play Store.
- After downloading this app, click on the ‘Member’ tab and proceed to ‘Balance/Passbook’.
- Enter your UAN as well as your registered mobile number.
- The EPF balance details will be displayed after your details have been verified.
II. Using EPFO portal using UAN
An alternative to using the unified Umang platform, employees can also access their EPF passbooks on a website run by the Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) as well.
You will be required to tag your account with your Universal Account Number (UAN) in order to view the EPF passbook on the portal. The steps to download or print the EPF passbook from the EPFO portal is as follows:-
Step 1: Visit the EPF India website
Step 2: Click ‘For Employees’ under ‘Our Services’
Step 3: Click ‘Member Passbook’ under ‘Services’
Alternatively, you can visit the passbook page directly:-
However, note that you can only access your EPF account if the UAN has been verified and activated by your employer. Without this verification, you cannot access your EPF. If your UAN has already been activated by your employer, enter the number and the password to login.
Note: This facility is unavailable for members of those organisations that do not come under the EPF Scheme, 1952.
III. By sending an SMS
You can send an SMS to get your PF balance if your UAN is registered with the EPFO. Send the SMS to 7738299899 with the message: EPFOHO UAN ENG where ‘ENG’ is the first three letters of your language of choice.
This SMS option is provided in 10 different languages, which are – English, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, and Punjabi. Note that this SMS has to be sent from your registered mobile number only.
Also, make sure that your UAN is linked with your Aadhaar card, PAN, and bank account as EPFO only sends the requested details of members available in the record. If these numbers are not linked, contact your employer and ask him to seed it.
IV. By giving a missed call
Give a missed call on 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number to receive the details, provided you are already registered on the UAN portal. Do ensure that your UAN is seeded with your Aadhaar number, PAN, and bank account number, or that it is seeded by your employer.
Also, note that if your Employee Provident Fund is managed by an exempted establishment or a Trust, you would have to ask your employer to check the EPF balance for you.
